Amritsar, October 13
Anguished over the atrocities being committed against Dalits in the state, Punjab Congress president Captain Amarinder Singh plans to meet the family of slain Dalit youth in Mansa in the next few days.

The Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) president plans to visit the family of Sukhchain Singh, who was brutally murdered by the liquor mafia in Mansa on Tuesday, to pay his personal condolences and assure them of his party’s support in their fight for justice.

“I will meet the youth’s family and assure them that the Congress would not allow the culprits to go scot free at any cost,” he said here in a statement.

Lamenting the repeated attacks on Dalits by mafia and criminals with links to the ruling SAD leadership, Captain Amarinder demanded that the police conduct a thorough, unbiased investigation into the case. “Such criminals cannot be allowed to roam free,” he said, adding that it was the responsibility of the state government, through the police, to bring them to book.

Sukhchain was massacred to death and his limbs chopped off in a brazen display of brute force by the liquor mafia in the state two days ago, even as Dalits in other parts of the state continued to live in fear of similar attacks on them. In Sangrur, where a clash between upper caste landlords and Dalits had triggered tension last week, several families have fled their village amid sizzling tension.

“It is evident that crime against Dalits in Punjab has increased by horrendous proportions under the Badal regime,” said Captain Amarinder, demanding stern and prompt action against the perpetrator of all anti-Dalit crimes. “The government should prove that it’s not in collusion with the criminals by sending a strong message to the Dalit community,” he added.

Ridiculing Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal’s claims of Punjab being a peaceful state under his rule, Captain Amarinder questioned, “How can Badal even think of making such a claim when the government has completely failed to ensure the safety of the people?” Punjab has, in fact, become a crime state under Badal’s rule, the PPCC chief added.
