The Department of Community Education and Disability Studies, Panjab University (PU)
today observed ‘The International Day of Persons with Disabilities’ at the

Government High School, Sector 25, Chandigarh. A drawing competition on the theme
‘Breaking Barriers with Colours’ was held among children with special needs from
09:30 am to 10:30 am and a rally in Bhaskar Colony, Sector 25, Chandigarh was also
organized.
Chairperson of the department Dr. Anuradha Sharma said that the aim of observing
International Disability Day was to encourage better understanding of people
affected by the disability, make people or community more aware of rights, dignity
and welfare of differently-abled people, as well as raise awareness about the
benefits of integrating differently-abled persons into every aspect of life. The
students of B.Ed. Special Education (Learning Disability) raised slogans in the
rally.
Prof. Pam Rajput, the Chief Guest, delivered talked on community awareness for
disability and distributed prizes among the school children.
The programme was sponsored by Safe Hands Rehabilitation Society. The programme was
attended by senior faculty members i.e. Prof. Manjeet Paintal, Dr. Ashwani Sharma
Dr. Md. Saifur Rahman, Mr. Nitin Raj, Mr. Shamshad Alam, Mr Taukir Alam and the
staff. The vote of thanks was delivered by Prof. Manjeet Paintal.
