Chandigarh, June 10:  Rotary Club Chandigarh Golden Heart Awards were conferred on five women for their selfless contribution to the society here today at the Chandigarh Golf Club. 

At an interactive session that was designed to acknowledge the contribution made by women in Rotary as well as recognise the talented non-Rotarian women who are serving the society through their innovative solutions to societal issues, informed Rotary Club President Neenu Vij. 

Smt Kanta Saroop Krishen, the founder of the Blood Bank Society and its founder member, was conferred the Life Time Rotary Golden Heart Award for 2017.  Since she could not attend due to ill health, the award was collected by the Blood Bank Society’s member Ms Vineeta.

Other awardees who were honoured on the occasion included Smt Promilla Chandra Mohan, the leading activist for the special children and founder of SOREM, who emphasized the importance of personal hygiene and sanitation which, she averred, must be taught to every child right from home. 

Ms Salochna Ahuja, who trains deaf & mute children as beauticians, Dr. Vibhu Taluja who runs the Ashiana orphanage, and

Earlier the first lady in Asia to become the District Governor in 2003-04  Mrs Kawal Bedi, a grandmother and founder of a leading travel agency in the city, inspired the women participants by reminding them of the potential each one of them have in her address on "The Courage to Lead".

Kawal Bedi was one of the four ladies to be inducted into Rotary Club of Chandigarh way back in 1987 along with advertising professional now retired Sneh Popli, entrepreneur Vijay Wadhawan and a medical professional Dr Sarla Gopalan of PGI, when Rotary opened its doors to women membership.

Past President Sneh Popli underlined the importance of building one's value system which lends strength, conviction and courage to any professional women.

Dr Sarla Gopalan , who is no longer a member of Rotary Club of Chandigarh, having settled in Chennai after retirement, had flown in especially to participate in the programme.  She called upon the women leaders to take it upon themselves to encourage and empower the next generation of women so that they can also rise and contribute to the society. 

Past President Vijay Wadhawan highlighted the extraordinary attributes and qualities that women have to take up any challenging task in the world. 

Panel discussions were also held on Breaking Barriers, with Anu Bains Rtn Dr Roma Uppal , Bharatnatyam exponent Suchitra Mitra  and real estate developer Rtn Ritu Singhal participated. 

Journalist and founder of an NGO Ms Nimrat Kaur. University Professor Rtn Dr Santosh Gupta. anthropologist.Rtn Lalita Grover. amd  Ms Neena Kahlon discussed the importance of educating a women as a key to community development. ideas and innovations.

Ms Seema,  Rtn Anuradha Bakshi, and Ritu Gupta, discussed the significance of women working together as a team who can make a difference in the society. 

Rtn. Abha Sharma conducted the meditation session at the end of the session.

We in Rotary will always be thankful to such women for their courage of breaking the barriers and showing a new path to  next generation of women , opening new horizons and expanding our  vision, Neenu Vij said.
