He is Hindi Cinema’s most celebrated thespian. He has to his credit some of celluloid’s most iconic characters and at 94, he still manages to captivate his fans alike. Dilip Kumar, fondly addressed as the ‘Tragedy King’ of Bollywood had an unmatched command on emotions on-screen which is yet to be replicated. Celebrating his art, Zee Classic with its brand proposition of ‘Woh Zamaana, Kare Deewana’, premieres his popular film Gopi on Saturday, 2nd September at 12:30 PM.
Released in the year 1970, Gopi boasts of an ensemble of legendary actors Dilip Kumar, Saira Bano, Pran, Om Prakash, Farida Jalal, Lalita Pawar, Nirupa Roy, Johnny Walker, Mukri and Durga Khote. Directed by A. Bhimsingh, the film was remake of 1964 Kannada Movie Chinnada Gombe starring Kalyan Kumar and J Jayalalitha,who later went onto become a political stronghold. Gopi was highly praised for its performances and also fetched Dilip Kumar a Filmfare award nomination.
Gopi (Dilip Kumar), his elder brother Girdhari (Om Prakash) and their sister Nandini (Farida Jalal) lead a simple village life. When Girdhari goes to the landlord Lala(Pran), to take the money he had deposited for Nandini’s marriage, he gets thrown out. An angered Gopi forcibly gets the moneyand in turn is accused of stealing by the landlord. Girdhari throws Gopi out of the house who then leaves for the city to make it big in life.
