July 2017 : Out of the diverse issues that plague today’s youth, drug abuse is
one of the biggest epidemics. As opposed to the existing belief that only the
upper section of the society indulge in this vice, one film in 2016 broke all
myths and showcased shocking revelations about the overpowering menace of drug
abuse in the affluent state of Punjab. Zee Cinema, The World’s Largest
Theatre for Hindi Movies, brings the critically acclaimed ‘Udta Punjab’ on
your television screens on Saturday, 22nd July at 9 PM.
Directed by AbhishekChaubey,
the film brought together some of the most talented actors like ShahidKapoor,
Alia Bhatt andKareenaKapoor Khan, who played pivotal characters in
the film. The movie also introduced the Punjabi heartthrobDiljitDosanjh
to Hindi Cinema with a stellar performance that won hearts across the
nation. Showcasing a perfect mix of near-to-real and hard hitting performances,
exceptional storytelling and soulful music, the film was a frontrunner in
bagging awards in most of the categories in award shows.
Talking about
the social stir that the film created even before it hit the theatres, AbhishekChaubeysaid
“I don’t know if cinema really changes the world. It just makes people
aware of what is happening in our neighborhood. Movies, at times are a truer
representation of reality than TV or newspapers. Cinema is not just a
repository of information but also gets into the personal and emotional lives
of people who are affected by a problem. Our duty was to represent the problem
in all its dimensions and tell a human story about it. When the film came out,
it did very well in Punjab which means people somewhere connected with what we
were trying to say and they wanted to see all that was going on.”
Tommy Singh (ShahidKapoor) is a youth icon of Punjab and a
rock star known to make songs that revolve around the theme of substance abuse.
However, one fine day, his career comes crashing down and he goes on a
self-discovery journey to find his true calling. Sartaj Singh (DiljitDosanjh)
is a cop hunting down the smuggling and consumption of drugs in the state. His
story reveals the police department's involvement with the drug lords to ensure
hurdle free supplies. Dr. Preet Sahni (KareenaKapoor Khan) is working
tirelessly to make Punjab a drug free state and her character stands out as a
ray of hope who runs a rehab centre for youngsters. Alia Bhatt is a
migrant laborer and a field worker who gets involved in the on-going menace.
She is a fighter finding a way out of the storm.
How the four
parallel stories meet to put an end to the hazardous epidemic forms the rest of
the story.
