·         Children from slums being adopted at a cost of Rs.20 lakh
  On this occasion a poster was also released. 
Chandigarh, Nov 11:  Rotarians of District 3080 are adopting 1,000 children under its back-to-school programme, Asha Kiran’, an initiative under the Rotary India Literacy Mission, informed Raman Aneja, Districtn Governor of Rotary District 3080.
Raman Aneja informed that District 3080 covers over 75clubs in Chandigarh, parts of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Uttrakhand, from where Rotarians would be contributing Rs.2100 each to support the education of these children, for a year.
Former world president of Rotary International Rtn Rajendra K. Saboo, inaugurating the programme at Snehalya, said that ‘Asha Kiran’ is truly a ray of hope for the children from vulnerable communities who have either never been enrolled to any school or have dropped out.
He also announced that Rotary Club of Chandigarh would also adopt about 147 children, equal to the number of members in the Club, and support their education for one year, as well as help those best-performing children in their further studies. 
The Rotary District 3080 has signed a memorandum of understanding with another Chandigarh-based NGO, Vatsal Chhaya, which would be executing the project and provide logistic support for the programme.
There are children from the slums of Colony No. 4, Dadumajra, Dhanas, and the Rehabilitation Colony in Dhanas besides Snehalaya in Maloya from where the children have been selected for the 'asha kiran' programme.
Under the Rotary India Literacy Mission, the Rotarians are committed to send one lakh children between the age of 7 to 14 years back to school, and Rotary District 3080 would continue to reach out to even more children in future, informed District Literacy Chair Manpreet Singh Gandhoke.
